摘要: The research discussed here attempted to determine if (a) pycholing-uistics could explain the reading behaviors of adult Spanish speakers in and English, (b) theme readers transferred their skills English. results two studies are presented. In first study, twenty-one Spanish-speaking ESL students took cloze tests second English performances a good L1 reader poor were analyzed according established oral miscue procedures. these confirm psycholinguistic perspective for Spanish. However, it appears that language competence exerta powerful effect on reader, thereby reducing reader's advantage over when compared. It is concluded ceiling effectively prohibits complete transfer language. suggested limited command produces “short circuit” readers, forcing them revert “poor strategies.” Theoretical, pedagogical methodological implications discussed.
