摘要: Tropical forest soils decompose litter rapidly with frequent episodes of anoxia, making it likely that bacteria using alternate terminal electron acceptors (TEAs) such as iron play a large role in supporting decomposition under these conditions. The prevalence many types metabolism deconstruction makes useful templates for improving biofuel production. To investigate how availability affects decomposition, we cultivated feedstock-adapted consortia (FACs) derived from iron-rich tropical accustomed to experiencing anaerobic conditions and frequently fluctuating redox. One consortium was propagated fermenting conditions, switchgrass the sole carbon source minimal media (SG only FACs), other treated same way but received poorly crystalline an additional acceptor + Fe FACs). We sequenced metagenomes both depth about 150 Mb each, resulting coverage 26× more diverse SG FACs, 81× relatively less FACs. Both were able quickly grow on switchgrass, iron-amended exhibited significantly higher microbial diversity than unamended consortium. found evidence stress FACs increased sugar transport utilization This work provides metagenomic supplementation alternative TEAs may improve feedstock
