摘要: For some time it has been known that continuous soundings of temperature and salinity as functions depth in the main thermocline ocean have much complicated detail: small inversions, extrema, indications homogeneous regions separated by sharp gradients. On two occasions during summer 1965, closely-spaced stations were occupied order to discover whether or not there is extensive spatial coherence horizontally these features. It was found they are fact very thin horizontal laminae, extending from 2 20 kilometers horizontally, 40 meters vertically. After describing several different cases where laminae particularly clearly discernible, implications structures understanding vertical mixing processes occur explored. Estimates probable scale dissipation made. DOI: 10.1111/j.2153-3490.1967.tb01484.x
