摘要: Abstract There is a well known but comparatively little-studied relationship between crown diameters (K) and stem (d) of trees. Between about 20 50 cm dbh the very close to being linear, with an r2 value higher than 0.8. The investigation described in this paper was conducted establish relationships for 11 broadleaved species that are commonly grown Britain. results indicated all have K/d ratios when they young, ratio reduces as diameter increases, beginning stabilize around 30 cm dbh. Of investigated, walnut (Juglans regia) had by far highest other strongly light-demanding species, such birch (Betula pendula), low ratios. no strong suggestion could be used predict tolerance high more shade tolerant Shallenberger et al. (1986) . possible applications uses knowledge discussed, including implications decisions on spacings, basal areas per hectare, prediction desirable stocking levels any given mean diameter, thinning regimes. Also spacings might appropriate mixed stands, management overstories shelterwood systems, genetic selection breeding programmes volumes branchwood fuel.
