Globalisation of the Nile perch: Assessing the socio- cultural implications of the Lake Victoria fishery in Uganda

摘要: This is a review article that combines research findings to highlight the negative effects of Uganda’s adoption liberalization policies in its fisheries sector. Using Lake Victoria as case study, paper discusses impact liberalised industry on socio-cultural landscape smallscale/artisanal fishers and fishery-dependent communities Uganda. Dominated by Nile perch, fish export an important foreign exchange earner following trade liberalisation Government late 1980s. Although considered ‘success story’, positive industrial fishery have hardly ‘trickled down’ small-scale fishing communities. Conversely, been marginalised they can ill afford remain competitive amidst declining stocks. In early 1990s, there was considerable increase exports international market unmatched with effective measures balance between local demand, ecological sustainability sound conservation management practices. By 1990s inevitably noticeable decline total perch catches owing widespread over fishing, harvesting undersized use illegal gear methods. unsustainable exploitation resources undermined ‘conservation ethic’ traditional resource institutions practices governed sustainable ensured stability cultural homogeneity. As consequence, today characterised unemployment, malnutrition, food insecurity, environmental health hazards, criminal activities such thefts piracy.
