摘要: The aim of this study is to document the isolation a hypermucoviscosity (HMV) phenotype Klebsiella pneumoniae from 25 cases suppurative pneumonia and pleuritis two abscesses in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) central coast, representing first report zoonotic pathogen marine environment only second non-humans. Animals died 2h 4 days after being observed sick on beaches. Clinical signs varied dyspnoea coma. Gross post-mortem examination revealed fibrinous pleuritis, copious pus pleural cavity bronchopneumonia. K. isolates obtained lung swabs hepatic subcuticular were highly mucoid blood agar culture media positive "string test". Twenty-one 27 examined by PCR all for rmpA K2wyz negative K1magA genes. Although have previously commonly been mammals, their association with pure cultures bacteria, HMV phenotype, has not. This provides further evidence role mammals play as sentinels health risks humans coastal waters.
