Iron deficiency anemia in a ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) with concurrent chronic renal failure

摘要: Case Description—A 16-year-old vasectomized male ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) with a history of suspected chronic renal failure was evaluated because extreme lethargy, hyperpnea, and abscess the right pectoral scent gland. Clinical Findings—Examination anesthetized patient revealed an impacted gland serosanguineous exudate. A CBC serum biochemical analysis severe anemia, marked azotemia, hyperphosphatemia, hypocalcemia. Treatment Outcome—Supportive care (including fluid therapy phosphorus binder administration) initiated for failure; affected cleaned, antimicrobials were administered. The received 1 blood transfusion, darbepoetin alfa administered weekly to stimulate RBC production. Anemia azotemia persisted.
