Managing a Polyethnic Milieu: Kinship and Interaction in a London Suburb

摘要: figure of the 'cousin' has come to function as a 'cultural unit' (Schneider 1980a) in polyethnic and consciously multi-cultural setting. The setting, London's post-migration suburb Southall, shows young Sikh, Hindu Muslim South Asians, well Afro-Caribbeans some extent 'whites', converging upon an emphasis on cousin bonds claims. This convergence is understood internally plural process which, although subject hegemonic influences, relies variety 'community'-specific mutually independent agenda thus cannot be reduced direct dyadic exchanges. Exploring significance local multi-'cultural unit', argument draws both Schneider's idea 'two orders' structural articulation claims with cross-'community' loyalties. Ethnographic attention processes may help studies kinship overcome limitations regarding ethnic delineations boundaries culture.
