摘要: Purpose. According to published literature status epilepticus (SE) is associated with 7-39% mortality. Timely management one variable that potentially influences the outcome. We sought review process of acute SE at University Alberta Hospital and correlate outcome adherence a recommended treatment protocol. Methods. identified 86 patients 18 years age or older who presented convulsive our emergency room between 2000 2004. defined as continuous activity for 30 more minutes ≥ 2 convulsions incomplete recovery in interim. Information was collected pertaining etiology, epidemiology, management. then reviewed relationship protocol terms mortality morbidity. Results. Forty five were included. There males 27 females mean 45 years; 80% known have epilepsy. Sub-therapeutic drug levels found majority 60%; benzodiazepines (diazepam 81% lorazepam 19%) first line agent 93.3% mostly initiated by paramedics (EMS); 48.9% required intubation 26.7% admission intensive care. Four died. Control obtained sooner whom therapy administered according time frame (p ≤ 0.02). Conclusion. The presence strict protocols made readily available treating staff could improve patients. Despite lack standardized among various physicians, most are treated generally sequence frames. Analysis this data will help devise prospective protocols.
