摘要: The paper uses longitudinal Bureau of Census data on establishments included in the 1988 Survey Manufacturing Technology to identify and characterize plants that display persistently rapid employment growth across 1977-1987 (i.e., "Heroic Plants"). Such account for roughly 25% total job creation by operating throughout this time. In characterizing Heroic Plants relative other sample establishments, is able separate a characteristic's association with magnitude from its persistence. Further, conclusions are drawn recognizing potential biases introduced measuring performance time-series (e.g., regression mean). numerous features successful establishments. For example, when their exceptional begins be tracked 1977, these more capital intensive productive, they pay higher wages, than do whose will less and/or persistent during next decade. They also distinguish themselves larger gross investment ratios (relative either current employment, value added or stock). 1987 (the endpoint establishment tracking), labor productivity plants, spite labor-intensive operations. These creators share (although rapid) growers an above-average tendency use advanced technologies 1988. Finally, lower average wages production workers raising questions about division returns to, as well contributions of, owners, management highly businesses.
