Patients methods—Between May 1994 December 2001, 33 (26 men, 7 women; mean age, 55.2 ± 8.7 years; range, 37–74 years) underwent at institution. All had preoperatively suffered from stroke and/or transient ischemic attack, after which echocardiography showed PFO. Mean follow‐up 99 ± 30 months (range, 10–111 months) was 100% complete. Results—All survived operative procedure. Early complications occurred four (12%). Actuarial survival 1, 5 8 years 97 ± 3%, 97 ± 5% 94 ± 8%, respectively. At long‐term all but two were alive.
