Surgical closure of patent foramen ovale in patients with suspected paradoxical embolism: long-term results.

摘要: Objective—It is thought that a patent foramen ovale (PFO) the crucial mechanism in patients with suspected paradoxical embolism and cryptogenic stroke. It has been hypothesized closure of PFO would prevent further cerebrovascular incidents. We describe our early late experience surgical embolism. Patients methods—Between May 1994 December 2001, 33 (26 men, 7 women; mean age, 55.2 ± 8.7 years; range, 37–74 years) underwent at institution. All had preoperatively suffered from stroke and/or transient ischemic attack, after which echocardiography showed PFO. Mean follow‐up 99 ± 30 months (range, 10–111 months) was 100% complete. Results—All survived operative procedure. Early complications occurred four (12%). Actuarial survival 1, 5 8 years 97 ± 3%, 97 ± 5% 94 ± 8%, respectively. At long‐term all but two were alive.
