What makes a useful maturity model? : A framework for general design principles for maturity models and its demonstration in business process management

摘要: Since the Software Engineering Institute has launched Capability Maturity Model almost twenty years ago, hundreds of maturity models have been proposed by researchers and practitioners across multiple application domains. With process orientation being a central paradigm organizational design continuous improvement taking top positions on CIO agendas, are also prospering in business management. Although is increasing quantity breadth, concept frequently subject to criticism. Indeed, numerous shortcomings disclosed referring both as products model design. Whereas research already substantiated process, there no holistic understanding principles form function – that is, should meet. We therefore propose pragmatic, yet well-founded framework general justified existing literature grouped according typical purposes use. The demonstrated using an exemplary set related finally give brief outlook implications topics for further research.
