摘要: Helmeted guineafowl Numida meleagris populations in KwaZulu-Natal which once provided some of the best gamebird hunting Africa have declined significantly over past 15 years. This study investigated, by means a questionnaire survey, apparent collapse Midlands and Drakensberg regions, potential agricultural causes thereof. The number pesticides used, their toxicity levels, proportion land under cultivation can be used to discriminate between extinct declining versus stable increasing populations, being higher former populations. These results suggest that efficient, intensive farming practices not only compressed period year food is available guineafowl, but also reduced suitability farmlands as wildlife habitat. Remedies are suggested resuscitate optimize long-term preservation for sustainable utilization. Recommended management actions include judicious use creation suitable habitat at landscape scale.
