Stratospheric aerosol sulfuric acid: First direct in situ measurements using a novel balloon-based mass spectrometer apparatus

摘要: The first direct in situ measurements of the sulfuric acid contained stratospheric aerosol particles were made using a novel balloon-based Ion Molecule Reaction Mass Spectrometer instrument (IMRMS) equipped with an vaporizer. IMRMS method employed offers high spatial resolution. balloon flight took place on 23 October 1995 middle latitudes (44°N) and reached maximum altitude 24 km. Measured molecular number densities decreased increasing from about 2.9 × 109 cm-3 at 15km to 2.4 108 21 Corresponding mass mixing ratios are 2.5 0.6 ppbm, respectively. Calculated volumes inferred size distribution same agree well data standard assumption composition.
