摘要: Abstract The spotted-necked otter ( Lutra maculicollis ) is believed to be declining across its range and, in Benin, has recently been listed as endangered. In the largely restricted south of country, where it threatened by a number factors, including conflict with fishermen. Understanding nature and extent this conflict, impact that on local fishermen, well identifying feasible mitigation strategies, represents critical challenge for conservation managers. This study documents damage experienced 30 fishermen Hlan River, Southern Benin wetlands. We performed hierarchical classification analysis using Ward distances categorize fish species according level suffered, used generalized linear models identify predictors best explained damage. Our results suggest 16 commonly caught otters favored most valuable (but these were also abundant catch). However, although was extensive, monthly total income loss attributable (including equipment) estimated at only 9% per (considerably lower than 30% reported preliminary survey 163 same area). model showed increased significantly adult captured fisherman while cost length time fishing equipment left unattended. could reduced if checked least twice day recommend maximum interval between checks 700 min (12 h). Long-term sustainable management conflicts will require an integrated approach taking into account socio-economic, political environmental dimensions.
