This systematic review examined characteristics and effectiveness patient-targeted interventions that aim to enhance patients' participation in consultation. Methods Relevant studies were selected by a search databases until mid-2010 (Pubmed, PsycINFO CINAHL), citations relevant reviews as well backward/forward citations. A Best Evidence Synthesis was performed, taking into account quality studies. Results A total 52 publications included, describing 46 30 unique interventions. One-third delivered through either written or multimedia material, two-thirds face face. Most originated from English-speaking countries. Half targeted heterogeneous populations, one-third women with breast cancer. focussed on initial treatment-planning consultations. Overall, there evidence for an effect observed patient participation. There no doctor satisfaction insufficient psychological well-being, physical well-being consultation duration. The findings turned out be largely independent study quality. Conclusions Effect could only demonstrated immediate outcomes, is, behaviour consultation. Implications future research are discussed, including attention gaps literature choice outcome measures. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
