摘要: This paper describes how plant breeders and farmers worked together to produce improved varieties of maize for the low-resource Panchmahals district Gujarat, India. Initially, tested a range in participatory varietal selection (PVS) programme. However, none these proved be very popular with farmers, although who had more fertile fields adopted variety Shweta from Uttar Pradesh. Hence, 1994 breeding (PPB)programme was begun generate new, appropriate varieties. Yellow- white-endospermed were crossed that been either some extent following PVS or attributes, such as early maturity, that said desirable. In subsequent generations, population by mass traits identified farmers. generations, farmers did this populations which grown on land rented farmer. Soil fertility management lower than normally used research-station. The programme produced several have performed well research-station on-farm trials. One them, GDRM-187, has officially released GM-6 cultivation hill areas Gujarat state,India. It yielded 18% local control trials, while being seven days earlier silk. farmers' fields, where average yields lower, yield advantage 28% perceived GDRM-187 better grain quality landraces. PPB mature any those conventional breeding, took fewer years do so. returns PPB,compared are higher because it is cheaper benefits realised earlier.
