摘要: In recent decades, the cover of fleshy macroalgae has increased and coral decreased on most Caribbean reefs. Coral mortality precipitated this transition, accumulation macroalgal biomass been enhanced by herbivory nutrient input. Populations Acropora palmata (elkhorn coral) A. cervicornis (staghorn coral), two important framework-building species, have died throughout Caribbean, substantially reducing providing substratum for algal growth. Hurricanes devastated local populations spp. over past 20–25 years, but white-band disease, a putative bacterial syndrome specific to genus Acropora, more significant source large areas region.
