摘要: Drought occurrence in the upper Tana River basin Kenya has impacted negatively on water resources, hydro-power generation and agricultural production within basin. Although this is an important river Kenya, there limited research work that been done to assess characterize drought provide feasible mitigation measures /or coping mechanics for resources management. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was used spatio-temporal characteristics based precipitation data 41 years eight gauging stations Kriging interpolation technique applied estimate spatially while non-parametric Mann-Kendall (MK) trend test detection. Results show south-eastern parts of exhibit highest severities north-western have lowest values with averages 2.140 4.065, 2.542 4.812 1970 2010 respectively. areal-extend both areas increased from 4868.7 km2 6880 km2, 6163.9 6985.5 at 90% 95% significant levels no detected areas. results presented paper are useful formulating a early warning system can be assist managers developing timely planning managing
