摘要: The concept of territoriality needs review in the light recent mammalian studies. Intensive behavioural observations were carried out on white rhinoceros Zululand, South Africa, and results social organisation are summarised. Territoriality is exhibited by certain adult males has following features: (i) mutually exclusive ranges 1-2 km2; (ii) a dominant assertiveness interactions within territory; (iii) specialised scent marking techniques using dung urine; (iv) participation reproduction. Territories may be shared with one or more subsidiary bulls. rhino characterised as space-correlated dominance relationship function ordering reproductive competition among males. It plays no significant role population regulation. These conclusions extended to other territorial ungulates. Methodological criteria for suggested. Evidence needed differing classes; range utilisation patterns; spatial features relationships.
