摘要: Propolis, a resinous bee-hive product referred as "bee glue", is collected from various plant sources, such buds of conifer and poplar trees, by honeybees (Apis mellifera). Honeybees blend this non-toxic substance with their salivary secretions wax flakes secreted special glands on abdomens. Propolis has been used heal- ing agent for thousands years in folk medicine. There substantial evidence indicating that propolis exhibits broad spectrum therapeutic (biological/pharmacological) properties antimicrobial, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antitumor, anticancer, antiulcer, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective properties. contains more than 200-300 natural compounds. The biological/pharmacological activities depend the presence large number polyphenols, mainly flavonoids (flavonoid aglycones), aromatic acids, phenolic acid esters (caffeates ferulates), triterpenes, diterpenic acids lignanes. chemical composition beneficial vary depending source, geographic origin collection time. Present overview an attempt to discuss mo- lecular mechanism(s) underlying diverse biological effects propolis.
