The Influence of Van der Waals Forces on the Alignment of Nematic Liquid Crystals in Magnetic Fields

摘要: Abstract We calculate the van der Waals free energy for a nematic liquid crystal confined between two parallel dielectric half spaces. consider configurations: (i) director (direction of anisotropic axis) perpendicular to interface, (ii) interface. Assuming these energies dominate, their differences are compared configurations in presence uniform magnetic field For given specimen thickness Hc is found such that H alignment will occur. The dependence on calculated and experimental evidence discussed. When one spaces replaced by metal space, we predict no critical exist.
