摘要: BACKGROUND: 5 Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) and tryptophan are so-called natural alternatives to traditional antidepressants, used treat unipolar depression dysthymia. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether 5-HTP more effective than placebo, they safe use depressive disorders in adults. SEARCH STRATEGY: Trials were searched computerized general (Medline, Psychlit, Embase) specialized databases (Cochrane Controlled Clinical Register, Cochrane Collaboration Depression, Anxiety Neurosis Trial Register); by checking reference lists of relevant articles; handsearching specialist journals; contacting authors where appropriate. Publications all languages sought. SELECTION CRITERIA: included if randomized, patients with or dysthymia, compared preparations clinical outcomes assessed scales assessing symptoms. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Data was extracted independently the three reviewers, onto data collection forms. Inclusion criteria applied potential studies a coefficient agreement (Kappa) calculated for them. Disagreement resolved reaching consensus. quality scored according risk bias. Analysis combined due small number trials. MAIN RESULTS: 108 trials located using specified search strategy. Of these, only two trials, involving total 64 patients, sufficient meet inclusion criteria. The available evidence suggests these substances better placebo at alleviating (Peto Odds Ratio 4.10; 95% confidence interval 1.28-13.15; RD 0.36; NNT 2.78). However, insufficient be conclusive. REVIEWER'S CONCLUSIONS: A large appear address research questions, but few reliable. Available does suggest depression. Further needed evaluate efficacy safety before their widespread can recommended. possible association between potentially fatal Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome has not been elucidated. Because alternative antidepressants exist which have proven usefulness is limited present
