摘要: Rows of comb-like or tufted gill rakers in the oral cavity suspension-feeding fishes (for example, herring, anchovies and tilapia) have been thought to serve as (1) non-porous barriers that direct particle-laden water sticky roof, where particles are retained exits from cavity, (2) conventional dead-end filters sieve exiting between rakers, (3) retain encountered by a hydrosol filtration mechanism1,2,3,4,5,6. Here we present data computational fluid dynamics video endoscopy fish indicating three distantly related species function instead crossflow filter7,8. Particles concentrated inside filtrate but not on rakers. Instead, high-velocity along carries away raker surfaces transports towards oesophagus. This prevents clogging gaps solves mystery particle transport
