摘要: [1] The Cosmonaut Sea off the coast of Antarctica is characterized by highly variable sea ice conditions. As expands during austral fall and winter, embayments, open bodies water surrounded on three sides ice, as well polynyas often form. Using concentration data provided satellite-based passive microwave instruments from 1979 to 2004, we characterize these embayment events their size temporal evolution. The suggests a striking periodicity in occurrence with exception “quiet” period between 1984 1987. large seem appear approximately every years same location persist for anywhere mid-June mid-August. These results indicate there predictability events, adding important insight into characterization variability this region.
