H-ATLAS/GAMA: quantifying the morphological evolution of the galaxy population using cosmic calorimetry

摘要: Using results from the Herschel Astrophysical Terrahertz Large-Area Survey (H-ATLAS) and Galaxy Mass Assembly (GAMA) project, we show that, for galaxy masses above ≃ 108 M⊙, 51 per cent of stellar mass-density in local Universe is early-type galaxies (ETGs; Sersic n > 2.5) while 89 per cent rate production occurring late-type (LTGs; < 2.5). From this zero-redshift benchmark, have used a calorimetric technique to quantify importance morphological transformation over history Universe. The extragalactic background radiation contains all energy generated by nuclear fusion stars since big bang. By resolving into individual using deepest far-infrared survey with Space Observatory deep near-infrared/optical Hubble Telescope (HST), measurements index these derived HST images, estimate that ≃83 per cent formed occurred LTGs. difference between value fraction LTGs today implies there must been major ETGs after formation most stars.
