摘要: Shortly after the TORREY CANYON stranding, worldwide public opinion began pressuring maritime community for pollution-free tanker designs. Perhaps most widely discussed pollution abatement design feature is double bottom. In U.S. waters from January 1969 through April 1973 there occurred 30 casualties that resulted bottom damage. The paper examines all these accidents to determine how effective bottoms would have been in reducing their number as well amount of oil outflow. Results indicate a whose height one-fifteenth beam could preventing outflow 27 examined.
