摘要: ContextPediatric obesity has escalated to epidemic proportions, leading an array of comorbidities, including type 2 diabetes in youth. Since most overweight children become adults, this chronic condition results serious metabolic complications by early adulthood. To curtail major health issue, effective pediatric interventions are essential.ObjectiveTo compare effects a weight management program, Bright Bodies, on adiposity and with control group.DesignOne-year randomized controlled trial conducted May 2002-September 2005.SettingRecruitment follow-up at Yale Pediatric Obesity Clinic New Haven, Conn, intervention nearby school.ParticipantsRandom sample 209 (body mass index [BMI] >95th percentile for age sex), ages 8 16 years mixed ethnic groups were recruited. A total 135 participants (60%) completed 6 months study, 119 (53%) 12 months.InterventionParticipants randomly assigned either or group. The group (n = 69) received traditional clinical counseling every months, the (n = 105) intensive family-based program exercise, nutrition, behavior modification.
