摘要: Issues of energy independence and security, global climate change, the depletion fossil resources drive research into biofuels bioproducts. While emerging biorefineries pursue lower carbon transportation fuels, careful consideration a wide range potential environmental impacts is necessary to avoid unintended consequences. These concerns can be addressed by holistic life-cycle evaluation bioenergy/biofuel supply chains from raw materials acquisition, fuel conversion end use. Life cycle assessment (LCA) promising tool for assessing sustainability these biofuels. This chapter discusses current biofeedstocks introduces methodological framework LCA, explores challenges, critiques, benefits, applications LCA in evaluating performance emergent co-product systems. An analysis algal biodiesel production presented as case study, broader implications inform decision making are explored.
