摘要: The oils sands industry of Canada produces large volumes process water (OSPW) which is stored in lagoons. OSPW contains complex mixtures somewhat toxic, water-soluble, acid-extractable organic matter sometimes called 'naphthenic acids' (NA). Concerns have been raised over the possible environmental impacts leakage and a need has therefore arisen for better characterisation NA. Recently, we reported first identification numerous individual tricyclic NA by comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC/ToF-MS) methyl esters. acids were diamondoid adamantane acids, resulting, it was proposed, from biotransformation corresponding alkyladamantane hydrocarbons, known process. Biotransformation higher alkylated hydrocarbons was, until now, unknown but here describe pentacyclic as diamantane alkyldiamantane using same methods. Further, suggest tentative structures some tetracyclic formed, propose, ring-opening alkyldiamantanes. We that this further evidence originates extensive biodegradation oil, whether in-reservoir or environmental, although other oxidative routes (e.g. processing) may also be possible. results important helping to focus reclamation remediation strategies facilitating sources contaminated samples.
