摘要: A lengthening waiting list for treatment of varicose veins in a busy teaching hospital prompted careful review. Patients were sent detailed questionnaire which addressed current symptoms, progression the complaint and desire surgical treatment. Of 519 patients on list, replies received from 471 (91%). Forty-eight could not be traced after two questionnaires had been enquiries made with their last known local GP. further 87 (17%) removed because they no longer desired or private sector. The remaining 384 appointments specially organised Saturday morning assessment clinics attended by consultants senior registrars. Eighty failed to attend without giving reason list. 304 reviewed, was considered necessary 219, whom 182 suitable day-case surgery, leaving only 37 original who required inpatient care.
