摘要: We consider large scale, distributed storage systems with a redundancy mechanism; cloud being prime example. investigate how such can reduce their power consumption during low-utilization time intervals by operating in low-power mode. In low mode, subset of the disks or nodes are powered down, yet we ask that each data item remains accessible system; this is called full coverage. The objective to incorporate option into an existing system rather than redesign system. When doing so, it crucial should not affect performance other important characteristics full-power (normal) operation. This work comprehensive study what cannot be achieved respect coverage modes. paper addresses question for generic (where key component under investigation placement function system) as well specific popular designs realm storing cloud. Our observations and techniques instrumental wide spectrum systems, ranging from enterprise services. environment where cost imperative, effects savings magnified scale.
