摘要: Introduction: Patients undergoing cardiac surgery increasingly have greater comorbidities and subsequently are at higher risk of adverse postoperative outcomes. Despite some evidence suggests that prophylactic intraaortic balloon counterpulsation reduces mortality in selected high-risk patients, its use remains low. The aim this study was to investigate reported management strategies patients attitudes towards further research area. Methods: A 22-question survey developed distributed electronically all practicing cardiothoracic fellows through the email list Australian New Zealand Society Cardiac Thoracic Surgeons. Results: response rate 28% (n=31). Reported varied depending on specified preoperative indication. Prophylactic used occasionally or never by majority respondents for their with characteristics similar those previous trials. most frequent reason given not using lack data (42.9%), a willingness consider participation an randomised controlled trial large (79.3%). Conclusions: surgeons who responded do routinely patients. Further prospective is warranted ascertain whether potential barriers control counterpulsation, such as adequate patient numbers clear selection criteria, can be overcome.
