Protective effect of melatonin in carrageenan-induced models local inflammation: Relationship to its inhibitory on nitric oxide production and peroxynitrite scavenging activity. J. Pineal Res. 1997; 23:106–116. © Munksgaard, Copenhagen Abstract In vitro studies have demonstrated that is a scavenger oxyradicals an inhibitor (NO) production. In the present study, we evaluated treatment two acute inflammation (carrageenan-induced paw edema pleurisy), where oxyradicals, NO, play crucial role inflammatory process. Our data show (given at 62.5 125 μg/paw model or 25 50 mg/ kg pleurisy model) inhibits response (paw swelling, pleural exudate formation, mononuclear cell infiltration, histological injury) dose-dependent manner both models. Furthermore, our suggest exerts expression inducible isoform NO synthase. Melatonin also prevented formation nitrotyrosine, indicator peroxynitrite, inflammation. Taken together, results demonstrate potent antiinflammatory effects. Part these effects may be related inhibition synthase, while another part oxyradical scavenging.
