摘要: Objectives/Hypothesis Surgery of the inner ear can result in hearing preservation under certain conditions, but mechanisms responsible for or loss are not well understood. The specific aim study is to examine histological sections obtained at different time intervals after varying degrees surgical entry into ear, understand how cochlea protected. hypothesis that internal partitioning occurs. Study Design Histologic examination guinea pig ears by light microscopy. Methods Guinea pigs underwent lateral semicircular canal transection and plugging, ampullectomy, vestibulotomy, tone-burst auditory brainstem response thresholds 2, 8, 24 kHz were measured before surgery. Animals killed 1, 3, 7, 21 more days, temporal bones examined histologically. Results trauma consists fibrosis amounts inflammation near site entry. Cochlear hair cells nearly always preserved, even when occurs. Extension inflammatory associated with greater loss. Conclusion capable withstanding canals vestibule without complete cochlear function. Fibrosis creates an effective partition between rest ear. might be enhanced if contained.
