摘要: Abstract Two international meetings on ecological engineering, with a focus riparian buffer zones, served as the source for selected papers in this special issue: (1) an International Workshop Efficiency of Purification Processes Riparian Buffer Zones: Their Design and Planning Agricultural Watersheds, jointly organised by Hokkaido University, Japan, National Research Center Region, Civil Engineering Institute Hokkaido, Geography, University Tartu, Estonia, held from 5 to 9 November 2001 Kushiro City, Japan; (2) Conference Ecological Landscape Services Products, Society (IEES) Lincoln Christchurch, New Zealand, 25 29 Zealand. At these two meetings, altogether 94 oral presentations (17 invited speakers) 15 posters representatives 21 countries were presented. The editorial paper highlights trends investigation purification processes zones well planning, design management aspects buffers regarding wide spectrum their functions; it characterises which sources briefly explains main papers.
