摘要: This chapter summarizes the state of art for applications stable isotope probing (SIP) to bio-degradation and bioremediation research. SIP is one many emerging tools inquiry used by environmental microbiologists. The goals this are catalog analyze trends exhibited majority studies published date that pertinent biodegradation bioremediation. 14C-based phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA)-SIP showed chromatographic profiles related but distinct from known type II methanotrophs. Using PLFA-SIP analyses, a variety comparisons were made between forest, shrubland, pasture soils; methanotrophs dominant in forest while I dominated soil. When suitable probes available, fluorescent situ hybridization (FISH) an effective means microscopic identification microorganisms can be combined with techniques using radioactive isotopes identify metabolically active microorganisms. approaches FISH secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) have tremendous potential aid investigations examining roles bacteria biogeochemical processes organic pollutants. toward goal improved pollution-control technology. In general, no single technique or piece evidence sufficient advance discipline microbiology. But inherently heuristic—results create new information hypotheses tested confirmed multidisciplinary approaches.
