摘要: The geomagnetic field occasionally exhibits abrupt, worldwide variations that have a morphology similar to shown in Figure 1. Known as sudden impulses (SIs) or storm commencements (SSCs), these signatures been successfully explained compression of the magnetosphere caused by passage shock tangential discontinuity solar wind [e.g., Nishida, 1978]. Shocks propagate through (outward from Sun for fast forward shocks and inward reverse shocks, frame reference) discontinuities are simply carried with wind. purpose this note is examine definitions distinctions between SSCs SIs; modernize present SIs SSCs, which subset depending on subsequent observed values Dst alternate indices; recommend quantitative two terms open discussion.
