摘要: The Red Rectangle1 is the prototype of a class carbon-rich reflection nebulae surrounding low-mass stars in final stages evolution. central star this nebula has ejected most its layers (during red-giant phase), which now form cloud, and rapidly evolving to white dwarf. This also member wide binary system2, surrounded by thick, dusty disk material3,4. Here we report infrared observations Rectangle that reveal presence oxygen-rich material: prominent emission bands from crystalline silicates, absorption lines arising carbon dioxide. material located circumbinary disk, contrast previously known dust, found mainly extended nebula5,6. properties dust are similar those disks young stars7, believed be sites planet formation. Grain processing, perhaps even formation, may therefore occurring evolved star.
