摘要: Drosophila melanogaster has played a key role in our understanding of invertebrate immunity. However, both functional and evolutionary studies host-virus interaction this model have been limited by dearth native virus isolates. In particular, despite long history research, DNA viruses D. only recently described, none available for experimental study. Here, we report the isolation comprehensive characterisation Kallithea virus, large double-stranded first to reported from wild populations melanogaster. We find that infection is costly adult flies, reaching high titres sexes reducing survival males, movement late fecundity females. Using Genetic Reference Panel quantify host genetic variance virus-induced mortality viral titre, identify candidate genes may underlie variation, including Cdc42-interacting protein 4. full transcriptome sequencing infected males females, examine transcriptional response flies infection, differential regulation male-biased genes, involved innate immune pathways, cuticle development, chorion production, serine endopeptidase activity. This work establishes Virus as new tractable study natural relationship between viruses, hope it will serve basis future responses insects.
