We studied irrigated landscape at public schools, controlling type irrigation system (manual vs. automated control) interventions (control, directive, prescriptive, educational). monitored compare changes among systems measured plant needs historical use. Interviews diaries allowed study behavior custodians managing irrigation. Large effects overshadowed impact interventions. Schools using had high substantial capacity but actual savings varied schools. manual were opposite yet many still managed further reductions response Effectiveness depended upon contexts which they applied. Interventions more effective when led situational problem solving that integrated generalized scientific technical knowledge with experiential knowledge. Our findings suggest ways school districts decide where, when, how intervene promoting caution investing automated-irrigation systems, particularly if will be operated remotely.
