Optical bistability through nonlinear dispersion and absorption

摘要: A general theory of optical bistability for a homogeneously broadened two-level system in Fabry-Perot interferometer is presented. Both absorptive and dispersive mechanisms are included, the mean-field approximation cubic state equation derived relating transmitted intensity to all physical parameters. From perspective catastrophe theory, this describes an elementary cusp catastrophe. We show that bistable switching may follow not only from sweeping incident laser intensity, but also with continuous variation atomic or cavity detuning, density, fixed. For case having as variable control, domain studied some detail function remaining fixed Stability criteria considered including both absorption dispersion.
