摘要: Abstract Lewis's (Melanerpes lewis) and Red-headed Woodpecker erythrocephalus) breeding ranges overlap slightly, but co-occurrence within habitats is thought to be rare because of niche similarity. Our objectives were examine factors that allowed for co-existence in two burned pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests the Black Hills, South Dakota. We monitored 53 38 nests between 2002 2005, compared clutch initiation dates nest-site selection. Clutch did not differ species 3 4 years. multiple habitat surrounding species, only tree snag densities differed nest sites (65.1 ± 5.78 stems/ha) those Woodpeckers (48.5 6.06 stems/ha). These results are consistent with foraging techniques used by species. suggest partitioning an important mechanism coexistence these also recommend furt...
