Structural analysis and defect evaluation of ion exchange composite membranes used in electrolysis of sodium chloride in chlor-alkali process

摘要: Various tests were conducted to characterize a used ion exchange membrane. The DSC provided information on the water absorption capacity and phase transition of fresh membranes. Also, temperature chemical degradation was obtained by tests. test performed analyze thermo-physical processes during increase in temperature. SEM images for structural analysis Nafion composite taken from layers are nearly similar both membranes (fresh used), but mineral-coated layer is deteriorated engraved membrane, particularly PTFE network fiber. EDX elemental indicated presence Zr, Ti O, which could be attributed ZrO2 TiO2 top layer. At cathode side membranes, one cannot see mineral population S atoms less bulk polymer. membrane consists F C, while shows new peaks Ba, Ca, Mg Si atoms, indicating inorganic materials This can ascribed impurities present brine, introduced cell operation. FTIR showed that there no changes due its perfect stability harsh environment. results significant composition after operation chlor-alkali cell.
