摘要: During 1972 the downstream movement of anadromous artic char, Salvelinus alpinus L., from two rivers flowing into Cumberland Sound, Baffin Island, began during middle May and was completed within 2 weeks. This took place both day night. Upon reaching saltwater, many char older than 9 years (longer 20 cm) to migrate along shore Sound at a rate 0–6–0-9 km/day with result that average maximum distance travelled natal river 40–50 km. Char 6–9 old, 10–20 cm in length, remained much closer while those younger 5 never entered saltwater. period saltwater residence, fish frequently moved intertidal zone freshwater. Maturing sexes were occasionally found The upstream migration lakes second week August 5–6 Females tended ascend before males, although all different size age migrated simultaneously. Migration occurred 40 only freshwater between September normally located near bottom depth 15–40 m. this period, large scale movements probably very limited. Average annual mortality estimated 16.0% per year highest rates (25–30%) occurring ages 10 15–17 years. Many died old but physical deterioration after spawning also an important cause death.
