摘要: Though climate change is widely known to negatively affect the distribution and abundance of many species, few studies have focused on species that may benefit. Gentoo Penguin (Pygoscelis papua) populations grown along Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP), a region accounting for ~ 30% their global population. These trends population growth in Penguins are stark contrast those Adelie Chinstrap Penguins, which experienced considerable declines WAP attributed environmental changes. The recent discovery previously unknown colonies evidence for southern range expansion since last assessment 2013 motivates this review species. We compiled collated all available data every colony world report Northwestern section WAP. estimate be 432,144 (95th CI 338,059 – 534,114) breeding pairs, with approximately 364,359 324,052 405,132) pairs (85% population) living Atlantic sector. Our estimates suggest has increased by 11% 2013, even greater increases (23%) Falkland Islands population, comprises 30% remained stable, though only subset been surveyed comprehensive survey 2010. identifies South Georgia sub-Antarctic islands Indian Ocean as being most critical gaps
