摘要: Dams have been shown to impact freshwater mussels. We examined how mussels respond differently sized dams (18 vs. 4 m) on the St. Croix River and its tributary, Sunrise River. hypothesized that: mussel density growth rate would be greater downstream of smaller dam due relatively food subsidies temperature effects reservoir above it; small moderate as localized impacts were reduced. quantitatively sampled upstream dams. For a common species, Actinonaias ligamentina, we ascertained rates by measuring successive rings. The highest richness diversity large dam. Higher was found immediately below but declined downstream. A. ligamentina grew faster larger than individuals in other reaches. Food availability appeared influence for This study provides information that may help managers decide whether remove or maintain them because unique habitats these structures.
