摘要: The density gages on the Explorer 32 satellite have measured local variations in atmospheric that confirm waves propagate neutral atmosphere. were observed northern hemisphere over altitude range from 286 km (satellite perigee) to at least 510 km. are most prevalent higher latitudes near auroral zone (orbit inclination is 65°) and frequently late evening early morning hours, but not limited these times. apparent vertical half-wavelengths of increase with 1 286-km 70 510-km altitude. Apparently four integrally related wavelengths been observed, a ‘fundamental’ second, third, fourth harmonics. wave perturbation half-amplitudes limit detectability largest 50% smoothed profile value. These interpreted as free internal gravity propagating predominately north-south, or south-north, maximum horizontal between 130 520 dependence results moving varying velocity through slowly pattern nearly phase planes. This interpretation consistent observations large-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances by Thome Georges.
