摘要: Abstract Measurements of the differential cross section 20 GeV protons scattered elastically and quasi-elastically by a series nuclei, ranging from Li to U, are presented. The total elastic sections also given. light nuclei show, at smallest angles, characteristic center diffraction peak produced an absorbing disc; larger angles quasi-elastic scattering single nucleons predominates. heavy exhibit rings up largest explored (≈ mrad). patterns interpreted with optical model that takes into account contribution both nuclear Coulomb interactions. radii heaviest turn out be consistently than those deduced electron experiments. opacity is found nearly complete only in nuclei. Results measured show small fraction can act as effectively independent centres.
