摘要: Background When support staff use questions to instruct, advise or guide adults with intellectual dis- abilities (ID), solicit information from them, the interaction does not always proceed smoothly, particularly when replies are ambiguous, absent obviously relevant.That can lead interac- tional trouble and dissatisfaction, worse. Methods We report on ways in which members transform their over a series of conversational turns order an adequate reply, thereby fulfil interactional goal question. Our data come approximately 30 h recordings natural conversation between ID two residential one outdoor activities settings. Results identify seven practices by attempt resolve dilemma undue direction premature closure.These include: expansion original question, simplifying its format, changing content various realising alternatives physical form. Conclusions highlight strategies produce answers satisfactory both parties, improve quality people ID.
